Swachh Survekshan 2021

The Swachh Survekshan is basically a survey of how well states in the nation have abided by the cleanliness policies mentioned by the central government. Swachh Survekshan, therefore, becomes the rewards and recognition ceremony for those who have duly abided by norms prescribed by the government. There are set categories of awards and they are awarded to states or cities based on the data generated from the Survekshan (survey).

What is the swachh survekshan?

The Swachh Survekshan is a part of the Swachh Bharat Mission and it is an annual survey of cleanliness, hygiene, and sanitation all over the country. The ranking exercises are taken up by the government of India and the data generated is used to assess rural and urban areas. This is done for their levels of cleanliness and active implementation of Swachhata mission initiatives on a regular basis.

The Swachh Survekshan in the Urban areas is conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs whereas, in the Rural areas, it is conducted by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.

Swachh Survekshan evaluates cities on the criteria of “population category” but for 2021 they will be categorized on the basis of six indicator wise performance criteria:

  1. Segregation of waste into wet, dry and hazard categories
  2. Processing capacity against wet waste generated
  3. Processing and recycling of wet and dry waste
